A state of the art ‘living laboratory’, Newcastle University’s Urban Sciences Building is home to world-class research and education facilities. Projects undertaken within Urban Sciences Building involve several different sectors including computing, energy, water, digital urban sensing and infrastructure. The building itself has gained recognition for its unique design, earning the Collaborative Built Environment Award.

Birwin Architectural were proud to provide façade services for such a significant project. Providing an original and distinctive aesthetic is the glass rainscreen cladding with digitized print. Furthermore, the Geze automatic sliding entrance doors offer a visually outstanding solution with discreet operational mechanisms.

This building is part of the Newcastle Helix and packs a lot into its 134,500 square feet including the Urban Observatory, National Green Infrastructure Facility, National Centre for Energy Systems Integration, Smart Grid Laboratory, Energy Storage Test Bed and the Decision Theatre. It also contains 4,000 sensors which provide information regarding environmental, mechanical and electrical performance.
